Question about merging .esps

I've done a few merges for armor mods and little things. Has anyone had success merging follower mod .esps or dungeon/quest mod .esps? The merge plugin script page on nexus makes me believe it's possible but has anyone tried?
EDIT: For example, I want to merge the .esps for a bunch of standalone followers together and the .esps for the Blades vs Thalmor quests together to save my game from the .esp bloat/cap.
