Heroic challenges in giants

I hear contradicting facts. And I would like to know answers. I have all 32 original Skylanders, however not all the series 2 reposes/ lightocores from Giants. I would like to do all the heroic challenges in giants, but someone told me that in giants you can only unlock the heroic challnges if the skylanders have an orange plate (meaning not my 32)
Is this true? Or how does it work?
