EDIT: Thank you so much for all the response, I've gained a better understanding on this issue because of it. Feel free to add more as you wish. I just want to say that even though a lot of the comments and responses below are long, I encourage anyone here to read all of them because this is such an important issue to discuss, it is something I feel hasn't been explored yet at least to a large extent.

As a person who identify within the spectrum of the LGBT community, I am extremely grateful that we are getting more and more representation in the media. Season 3 of skam and its remake is such a beloved work and a fan favourite of many as far as I can tell. However, there is a question that has been bothering me for quite sometime now, something that I can't comprehend alone.
Is there a (unwanted) danger in such form of representation? I've seen a lot of people fetishizing about gay shipping and all that jazz on the internet. In a way, I'm sort of unsure if this is the right step to social acceptance. I don't really want to be stuck in a realm where gay relationships are only fetishized/fantasized. Because we all know that we still experience so much crap even in a progressive time like this.
I need reassurance from someone that maybe I'm just overreacting. I know that media representation is very important to our community, which is a bit contradicting for my argument (I Know). But I would really like to know your thoughts on this, maybe I'm not alone. Thank you!
***To help better understand this issue, here a few analogies I've gathered, hopefully it helps.
- In season 4 of skam france, Imane confronted Ingrid about dating non-caucassian men. Because, she is clearly a racist, Imane brought up that she only dates them out of fetish or to piss off her white parents.
- I've also observed this in the Black Lives Matter movement, where white people (unknowingly or in some cases deliberately) utilize this movement in a manner that depicts a "white saviour" narrative. Even though systemic racism is clearly rooted in such a privilege. ((Sorry for being vague on this one but this is an entire discussion on its own))
- The musician Lizzo recently gave an informative interview where she indicated that a plus-size body like hers is seen only as a trend in this society as opposed to sheer acceptance.
Apologies for being political and for being slightly off-topic in my examples, thanks in advance for the response.
