Why does my singing sound in pitch in my head even when it’s not?

I’ve always been a terrible singer but I love music so I’d like to improve even a little bit. I try matching pitch to a keyboard and I think it sounds good but it’s usually horribly off when I use a tuning app. I play the piano and I’m decent at learning melodies by ear so I’m not truly tone deaf but somehow it doesn’t apply to my own singing voice (until I hear a recording). Why does it work this way?
