I've been to Singapore a few times now, and on this past trip my wife and I decided that given we want to live abroad, it would make a lot of sense to consider Singapore. Her company has an office here, so there's the potential for job continuity, and I work in digital advertising / have my own startup, and the environment here is quite good for both. We currently live in the US, so there's a couple things we'd have to do some preliminary research on before we decide to take the plunge (assuming we have the go-ahead career wise). I was wondering the following:
- Is shopping on Amazon something that can be done easily? We rely on it heavily for a lot of things at home, so knowing we'd have at least 75% of the availability / capability of that here would be helpful
- Dogs - we have 2 medium sized ones (25lb and 45lb) and wanted to see how sensitive people are especially when it comes to apartments here. I see there are a couple dog beaches on Sentosa which is pretty awesome.
- Also related to dogs - dog sitting when we go on trips. We use a service in the states called Rover. It's basically Airbnb for dogs, and you can pick sitters based on price, location, etc. Is there something similar here?
- I know how expensive it is to buy a car here, but what about leases? We currently lease a high-end SUV at home but was curious what kind of lease schemes are offered here. With 2 dogs and eventually kids, it would be helpful to have something where we can pack everything/everyone into a car.
- Credit cards / credit scores. How does that work here? It seems like Mastercard has a big footprint here, but what about American Express or Visa?
- What are the best neighborhoods to rent an apartment in?
- I've read about some controversies of discrimination against non-Chines / non-Mandarin speaking people - is that pretty prevalent or more just small instances making big headlines?
- What's the attitude towards working remotely / working from home?
- Is it pretty easy to get a maid to clean like twice a month? Or even someone to cook once a week?
- How expensive is child care here?
Thanks in advance for all your help answering these.
