Is using minimap a bad idea?

Hello guys
I just started in sim racing and I can say I'm making quite a progress. When learning a track I use the minimap, so well I wanted to know if that's a bad idea, I'm afraid I'm developing a bad habit and it will make me dependent of it. Is this a common practice or should I stop doing it?
