Line between mindless consumerism and investing in yourself
Post Body

Where do people draw the line between overly participating in consumerism and accumulating crap, and buying things that will expand your skills, interests, and self?

Been getting into outdoor stuff. It’s great for my physical and mental health. I also like gravity… mountain biking is something I’ve been getting into more. Weighed up getting a better bike but it is expensive. Pulled the trigger and got one (last years model with a big markdown). But I’m still conflicted about relying on buying things to live out my best simple life.

edit: loving the comments about how people see this issue. Also, just to clarify, I’m replacing my existing bike that I’ve been using and is a bit limited in its capacity for the type of riding I’ve been doing; one of my kids needs a bike and my current bike will go to them, so I get an upgraded bike instead of them getting a new standard one; it is last year’s model and heavily reduced, and it fits into my broader outdoor lifestyle which is central to my physical and mental wellbeing, and is now part of my job (so I’ll also be claiming a deduction on my tax to get about a third of the cost back). Yeah, I’m probably overthinking this one.
