Signal Desktop users, what setup do you have to avoid the bombardment of messages and notifications when the mobile app connects to the internet after not being connected for a while?

Post Body
I generally keep my phone in airplane mode while I'm at home and switch to Signal Desktop from there. When I eventually connect my phone to the internet, my phone is having an aneurysm while downloading and loading all the messages from my Signal Desktop sessions.
How do I avoid this without turning off notifications for the mobile app completely?
I feel like this should be a common problem but I don't know what search words to use so I didn't really find any satisfactory answers while searching.
