Dichotomous Key (how do I use this?)

1.) Did you buy your mushrooms from a dealer/were they grown?

Compare to these:

Psilocybe cubensis (the most commonly sold species of "Shrooms")

The blue bruising is from Psilocin oxidation, not mold.

If your mushrooms were bought from a dealer take them out of the bag. Posts of mushrooms in bags will be deleted. Also all pictures asking for weights will be deleted.

2.) Did you hunt or find your mushrooms?

  • Do they lack a cap or have tubes, teeth or pores under the cap? ........Not active (it doesn't matter if they bruise blue)

  • Do they have gills? .............3

3.) * Are the gills white, yellow, grey, pink or green or another color?....................Not psychoactive

  • Are the gills brown, black or rust colored?.................5

4.)

  • Spore print color jet black, brown, rusty orange or black with purple tints ........................6

  • All other spore print colors........................ Not active

5.)

  • Mature mushroom is deliquescing, (turning into ink)...........Not active, Coprinoid.
  • Mushroom cap or gills not turning to ink......................6

6.)

  • Mushrooms bruise blue when damaged, sometimes faintly or only at the base................Post for an ID.

  • Mushroom not bruising.................not active

All non active IDs should be posted to /r/mycology

Posts with inactive mushrooms will be removed.

How to post an ID

  • Take a picture of the mushroom in situ (before you pick it)

  • Provide pictures of fresh, unbroken specimens

  • Post a pictures of the cap, gills (underside), stem and base

  • One mushroom per picture

  • List the habitat (grass, dung, forest, wood chips on wood etc, and the trees nearby)

  • List the location (a general geographic area is usually sufficient)

  • Describe any odors (Anise, Phenol, Cucumber, Potato etc.)

  • If you have multiple pictures please put hem in an Imgur album, do not make multiple posts

Nobody can eyeball weigh your fungi, don't ask how much it weighs, buy a scale or make one from common household objects.
