Crossbreeding prevention?

Do I need to keep a tank of all one color to prevent crossbreeding or do certain subspecies avoid crossbreeding? OR! Is there a chart or general guidelines for crossbreeding certain kinds to create something awesome? And anyone randomly get red rilis? My 40 gallon fish tank had jade green and blue and now.....red rilis babies...somehow....
