I'm seriously considering buying a 2002 Toyota Echo with 99,000 miles on it. It has an automatic transmission, 4-doors, power steering, but no power locks, no power windows, no ABS, and rear seats that won't fold down. It passed smog 6 months ago.
The owner is asking $2600, which seems reasonable, but the only paperwork they have is from an oil change. (They also have the registration and pink slip, of course, but no other maintenance records, because they haven't done any other maintenance.) They've had the car for 6 months, bought it used, say they have had no issues with it at all, and are giving it away after getting a nicer car (Camry Hybrid) from a public auction.
Any thoughts? I have the VIN and could pull a Carfax report, but I know those are only useful to the degree that insurance companies and mechanics actually choose to use the reporting service. Wish I had more information about the condition of the car, other than the check that I did myself--no leaks, engine shake, coolant or oil issues, exhaust fumes, or plainly visible under-the-hood stuff, and it's in great cosmetic shape--but I'm not a mechanic, or even much of an enthusiast.
