The Garnet Veil
As he exited the room, all he could see were the souls of the wandering facelessâ wearing masks dripping with black blood tore apart from their earthly corporeal forms. Some battered and bruised, some left only with their torso whilst holding their intestines in their arms. He closed his eyes, hoping he was just imagining things he opened them again, now seeing that there was nothing there. âMaybe I should get some sleep.â he said to himself. As he walked to his bedroom he heard whispers, âKenjiâ the voices whispered. âHello!?â he replied. As he turned around to where he heard the voices, he saw his older brother, standing with a broken mask and a dark grey mist surrounding him. âKazu?â he said with teary eyes. Suddenly the mist surrounding Kazu had sank into the deepest corners of the room, making it seem as if the room went on for hundreds of miles. As a single tear dropped from kenjiâs face, his brother lunged at him. Kenji saw the apparition moving at him at a hundred miles an hour, his adrenaline kicked in, he bolted around the dark hopelessly searching for an exit. He ran for what seemed like hours until he reached a familiar house, without a second thought he swung the door open ran inside and slammed it shut. He ran upstairs into a room which had many toys, games, and a desk. He hid inside the closet where he hoped he had lost the demon which he called his brother. âIts not himâ He whispered to himself. Whilst smelling gasoline leak throughout the house âKenjiâ Kazu called out. âI can smell you. You're scared. I know.â He said calmingly âBut I love fear.â He said, now morphing into what can only be described as chaos in its true form. Long wavy arms spewing out from his body, a gigantic mouth with 100,000 sharp, pointy teeth and long vertical eyes that could see anything. His voice becoming more and more raspy and hoarse. âNow where are you?â He said in a tone that shook the foundation of the house on which they stood. He moved towards the bed, sniffed the sheets, and said to Kenji âDo you know whose house this is, Kenji?â He smiled a devilish smile, making clicking sounds from his throat. He laughed a booming bellow, shaking Kenji to his core. âYou don't remember?â Kazu asked in a sinister tone, and in that moment kenjiâs fears manifested in his brother. Kenji swung the door open and ran out of the room down into the kitchen, bursting into the garage knocking over a gasoline canister spilling out of the house onto the driveway. Kazu chased after him âDon't run brotherâ He said, menacingly. Kenji looked back at Kazu and then looked at the puddle of gasoline âI have an ideaâ He said, in a sanguine tone. He pulled out a lighter kazu had given him for his 13th birthday. âGoodbye, brotherâ Kenji said, tearfully. Kazu bursts through the garage door, kenji flicks the lighter open revealing an engraved message, âuntil the sun burns out and the garnet veil fallsâ the message read. âYou'll always be my brotherâ Kenji said in a calm voice, holding the lit lighter and with all his force threw the lighter into the garage igniting the gasoline puddle which in turn ignited the gasoline inside the house exploding the house in which he had lived in all those years ago. Once the house had blown up the garnet veil of the room fell and the dark grey mist dispersed, allowing Kenji to see clearly and as he exited the house he came to terms with his brothers death. His years of solitude were over.
