Economics PhD Guidelines
Post Body

We would like to welcome to the University's Economics PhD program! The following is a general summary of guidelines; please consult your handbook for an exhaustive list of requirements.

  • Candidates are expected to have experience with mathematical analysis, linear algebra, and statistical and probability theory at the very least. We host a three-week math camp before the quarter begins for those who need catch-up.

  • Candidates must take a full-years' sequence of micro theory, macro theory, and econometrics in their first year, at the end of which they will complete general exams.

  • If your micro theory professor says that he bases his lectures off Varian's Microeconomic Analysis, calmly exit the room and report this to S142.

  • If your macro theory professor opts to cover New Keynesian models before Real Business Cycle models, remain calm, do not leave, and continue taking notes. If you must leave due to an emergency, ask about Kyland & Prescott (1982). You will be given 15 seconds to exit.

  • Candidates who do not pass their general exams on their first attempts are welcome to retake them the following year. There will be no third attempt.

  • Undergraduate students enjoy spreading rumors about alleged incidents occurring in certain rooms on the 3rd and 4th floor. Please do not let these frighten you.

  • Candidates are expected to take sequences in two of the following ten specializations: financial economics, behavioral economics, environmental economics, mathematical economics, pLorEklAkaj AlqOf, macroeconomics, empirical methods, international economics, public economics, and labor economics.

  • Candidates must take specialized classes in their second and third years, with exams at the end.

  • None of our specialized classes cover the IS-LM model. Leave swiftly and report it to S142 if your professor begins to cover this.

  • There is no eleventh specialization. If you meet a student not specializing in one of the aforementioned ten, invite her to the graduate lounge, drop off your belongings with her, and use the restroom. You may retrieve your belongings after two minutes.

  • Candidates' final years are focused on using their chosen specialization to construct and defend a thesis under the guidance of an economist advisor.

  • Any candidate wishing to specialize in mathematical economics must consult with Professor Murphy in S315. Professor Long is no longer with us.

  • Classes are never held in S246.

  • The graduate lounge, S200, is available for use at any time. If the cleaning crew should enter, simply hold up a general or specialized textbook.

  • Candidates' stipends are available bi-weekly in S143. Please bring your ID card and a general or specialized textbook for convenience.

  • Please ignore and delete any emails supposedly offering graduate housing on behalf of the University. Any candidate who receives such an email may find it in their best interests to change their email address.

  • Dissertations have never been and will never be defended in any of the following rooms: S314, S348, S424, S425, S426, and S439. Memorize this list.

Again, this is only a summary of guidelines. Welcome to the University's Department of Economics!
