Is the Shopify chat/inbox thing crappy or is this common for all chat apps?

I use the native Shopify chat/inbox thing to provide real-time customer service and I've noticed that about half the time, the customer will ask a question and then bail out before I can reply.... we're talking within 1 or 2 minutes. It also often fails to actually email my reply to them like it's supposed to.
Any of you notice this also? Should I switch to a better chat app? I don't like paying extra for apps, only the ones that I absolutely need.
