Callbacks in Node.js

Just getting started with Javascript and Node.js (I'm going to learn every JS framework in the next 2 weeks, I'm at a boot camp FYI). Question about callbacks: whose phone number do I put to call back to? Mine? What happens if I'm not available? Will the program wait for me to call it back? Are these long-distance calls?
Thanks for the help, I'm going to make the next facebook that's powered by MongoDB (it's web scale!) right after I finish this boot camp!!!
