I just got finished building my time machine and I need some advice...

What are some guidelines to follow to assure safe, paradox free time travel that leaves minimal chance of blinking myself out of existence? I don't want to accidentally prevent some of my incredibly distant relatives from meeting hundreds or thousands of years ago, for instance.
