Is bad diamond stropping compound better than aluminum oxide?

I'm looking to try a diamond strop compound but the price range varies a lot. I currently have a green aluminum oxide strop. Would trying a cheaper diamond paste or spray be better than the one I have or is it worth it to try a expensive one?
