The Reddit Alternative Shark Week Project
Post Body

Redditerati, I’ve been thinking about this for a little while and I think we need our own Shark Week programming. I grew up with the golden age of the Discovery Channel and Wild Discovery, etc, and loved Shark Week, but I’ve become jaded as it became a vehicle to try and plug other yearlong shows and hashtag advertising. Now, I am cautiously optimistic that this year Discovery has some good shows investigating sharks in catatonic states and the deep sea (even if they insisted on sensational titles Zombie Sharks! and Alien Sharks!) as well as NatGeos SharkFest counterprogramming

But we live on the internet! There should quality programming everywhere! Why not take our own stab at a free online Shark lineup of 12-14 hours to replace or supplement shark week. The videos will also be connected to http://therealsharkweek.com/ thanks to /u/demistified In my mind the videos should:

  1. Be fairly long--you shouldn’t have to click links more than 4 times for your night of programming
  2. Be oldschool shark week educational—No clickbait. No shark fishing. No home movies. No Mark Cuban shows. Some things we find may be outdated, but it would be great if they were top science when they came out
  3. Avoid what Discovery does (a) —leave the shark attacks to them
  4. Avoid What Discovery does (b)(expert level) – try to have as much non great-white programming as possible (wish list: blue shark, lemon shark, leopard shark, nurse shark, etc)

Additionally, it would be great if they were stable links to the copyright owners, so anyone clicking through doesn't have to risk a dead link. We might have to be more realistic and have one of these a day

I submit the following into the Shark Pool. I hoped to find 14 hours on my own and let the community improve it, but so far I only have about 2 nights worth from the big streamers. You can find our links and draft breakdown below I’m sure there more from online lecture databases too.
