Migration has caused mass downloads!

So we have migrated customers to SharePoint online, to which they have said, they only want to use the sync function and not the SharePoint interface.
We have done the migration today I’m being told by the company, but everyone’s laptop is now trying to download everything in SharePoint and causing hard disk problems .
Surely there is a setting that you can only have to download or sink the folders that you need rather than every SharePoint site. You are a member of please tell me .
