The more we learn about logical fallacies, the better able we will be to detect irrational claims that koo koo cult members try to use on us. And just as importantly, we can learn if we are making the same mistakes in our conversations with others! I definitely picked up bad logical fallacy habits after spending so much time with the other culties.
So out of this long list list, I'm highlighting Ambiguity as today's SGI logical fallacy.
"The fallacy of ambiguity refers to the use of a double meaning or an unclear descriptive applied to mislead or misrepresent the truth. Then changing the meaning of the terms later."
I cannot count how many ambiguous definitions SGI has for its cult words. Here are a few that come to mind:
"Shakubuku" 1. Break and subdue (literal translation) 2. Convert to SGI
"Kosen rufu" 1. World peace 2. All people converted to SGI
"Nam Myoho Renge Kyo" 1. Title of the Lotus Sutra 2. "I devote myself to the mystical law of cause and effect through sound" 3. Life force of the universe
Can you think of any other definitions for these that I left out? Or any other SGI terms for which you heard multiple different and ambiguous definitions?
