Weird question about anal

Okay so my girl and I have been together for years . We have sex almost daily but she's rarely in the mood for anal. When she finally does get in the mood for anal I'm not sure if I get too excited or if I'm straining to hard to get it in her ass but usually after we struggle trying to get it in it goes soft. Even though I'll want it so bad and so does she. Can anyone explain what's going on here and how to fix it? Yes we use lube and she uses a small plug before we try.
