I've managed to go through life without any STDs so far despite lots of making out and (protected) sex with lots and lots of people. Except last week I got a cold sore for the first time in my life (I'm 19). I went to the doctor and got it swabbed, and I just got my results back: it's HSV-1.
Now, I know that something like 70% of adults have it, so I know this isn't a big deal - but what's the etiquette here? Do I tell everyone before I kiss them? It's obvious that no one does that - no one has ever brought that up with me, at least, and I've kissed hundreds of people, so I'm sure many of them had HSV-1. Or do I tell them before I kiss them, but only if I have an active/recent cold sore? What about oral sex? I know that you can transmit HSV-1 from your mouth to your partner's genitals, so obviously there should be a conversation about that - but do I do it before unprotected oral no matter what, or only if I've recently had an outbreak? I tend to be pretty conservative about this sort of thing, but bringing it up before kissing seems conservative even to me.
Any other things I should keep in mind now? No sharing drinks, no using spit as lube, uh... anything else like that?
I'm primarily concerned about infecting my partners' genitals, or infecting my own either through my own clumsiness/stupidity or by kissing a partner before they go down on me or something. I'm familiar with viral suppression therapy and will ask my doctor about it tomorrow.
