Tried coconut oil...
Post Body

Executive summary: Coconut oil gets a fair amount of positive comments around here as a lube, so my SO and I decided it might be worth giving it a try. It's was really nice, and we'd recommend it to others.

Long answer:

First some background - as a result of some medication she is on, my SO tends to be very dry during sex, so we use lube (usually quite a lot of lube) maybe 95% of the time we have sex. Our go-to lube is a local brand of water-based lube called Wet Stuff; it's fairly cheap, nicely slippery, technically edible (although it tastes so sickly sweet - with a scent to match - you probably want to avoid getting it in your mouth), it doesn't dry too fast, and (important if you're planning on using lots of it daily) it cleans up very nicely. The down side is that, in order to ensure proper lubrication, we do have to use quite a lot, with all the drippy, goopy, sloppy, sticky issues that entails. It's wonderful, and much better than no lube, but it's hard to ignore the fact that you are using lube. Also, like any water based lube, it's not very good for anal, if you're into that kind of thing.

We bought some coconut oil at our local grocery store. It came in a tub, as it's actually hard at room temperature. It's soft enough you can scoop it out of the tub easily enough, and it melts in your hand very quickly. It's essentially scentless, and it's actually easier to work with than other lubes we've tried. It actually feels good on your skin (hard to describe; it's slippery without really having the "oily" feel I expected), it doesn't leave your hands sticky, and it's a good massage oil too. And it's also - unsurprisingly - really really slippery, and it didn't dry quickly either. All good characteristics in a lube.

For our first attempt, we didn't use very much. It ended up being a little more friction than normal, but it also ended up feeling very natural. Rather than being an obvious "hey, you're using lube!" feeling, it just felt...slippery. Cleanup was also pretty easy, again because we ended up using a lot less - meaning we could avoid the traditional "shuffle to the shower trying not to drip lube onto the floor". :)

It did take a bit of soap and scrubbing in the shower, but not a lot more than you'd need for water based lube, and a lot less than you'd need for a silicon lube like Jo (which we hate; it practically permanent it's so hard to clean up).

Looking forward to trying it again, and I just wanted to encourage other people to give it a go. It's really nice!

(Also, it's pretty healthy both internally and externally. Anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, good for the skin. It may cause latex condom failure though; google returned conflicting advice. In general, oil based lubes aren't good for latex, so it might be best to avoid.)
