Can doggy style be taught or does it have to come naturally?

Had a recent experience with a guy where I asked him to fuck me in doggy style and when we went to do it, he just froze behind me and let me grind on him for about 30 seconds before I gave up.
Now he says he wants me to teach him doggy style.
Please tell me how common or uncommon this is? I’ve never met someone before who couldn’t do it.
