How to alter an oversized hoodie?

Hello,

long-time lurker here! I'm still very much an amateur so please bear with me for not always using the correct sewing jargon.

My employer often gives out hoodies with company's logo and expects us to wear them around the office. However, myself being an obese female, the shape of an unisex hoodie doesn't really suit me. I usually choose size XXL, which fits my apple-shaped body around midsection and hips, but the top part is wayyyy too big. Big as in the shoulder seams are midway my upper arms.

I tried an alteration on one side of a hoodie by detaching a sleeve and then cutting excess fabric around the armscye so the top part of the sleeve would connect where my shoulder actually is. When I pinned the sleeve back, I noticed that the side seam of the hoodie was now way too wide. I tapered that narrower and stitched the sleeve back in. Now I realized the bottom of the sleeve was set way too low (it was attached to the side around my natural waist) so I cut the excess fabric off from the bottom of the sleeve and continued to sew the side seam higher until it reached the bottom of the now-altered sleeve.

So, now I have hoodie with one side done, and it fits kinda well, but the problem is that if I now do the other side as well by re-attaching the sleeve and taking in the side seam, it will be way too tight around the hip and midsection. I basically need like XL around the bust line but XXL around the hips.

One thought was to move the sleeves in, but then add a piece of excess fabric (around 2 inches) to the side seam going down from the sleeve to accommodate for the rounder midsection and hips, but not sure if that would work. Any thoughts?

TL;DR: Altered one side of oversized hoodie by making shoulders narrower and taking in the side seam, but doing both sides the same way would result the hoodie being too narrow around the waist and hips.
