Looking for some combination of Merino and Hemp or Flax, with or without Silk.
Hello, I'm currently trying to make a custom medieval/renaissance gambeson. I'm wanting to make it from a blend of Merino and Hemp, Merino and Flax, possibly with the addition of silk.
I specifically want to use merino wool due to it's thermal regulation properties and to help support the hemp or flax fibers so that it is less likely to wear over time (as I understand hemp and flax are brittle).
The garment will be for reenactment combat, and costume wear, which is why I'm being so insistent on quality.
A cursory search yielded some Chinese websites offering merino/hemp canvas, but it didn't seem like a very legitimate website and I'd rather not chance getting counterfeit goods.
I'm thinking I'm going to need about 25/30 yards of fabric. I will be quilting it with no artificial batting. Ideally I'm looking for a medium/light grey, but if it is light enough in natural color I have no issue dyeing it myself.
Does anyone know of some reliable sources for this type of fabric? I really appreciate any and all help.
