Embarking on maybe the most angst-inducing project so far

Post Body

So uh, this is maybe a bit different from other projects here, so I hope you stick through it with me.

When I was maybe 10 or so, my Granny made this blanket for me. I fell in love with it and it’s been everywhere with me since. My kids even call it the Magic Blanket because it’s always the perfect warmth.

It’s however taken a real beating. It’s traveled and been used a lot, and suffered through multiple pet cats and their attempts and making biscuits. The batting inside has also gone to pieces, now existing only as clumps.

My sewing skills haven’t been the greatest, and I was always afraid of making the holes worse (though they did anyway) when trying to mend it. But finally I got a new sewing machine, and am confident enough to now dismantle my beloved blanket and restore it. Picking apart the stitches was a hard decision to do 😭.

After gently washing the dissected layers, I got some very fine interfacing and ironed it to the top layoff the blanket. This is where all the cat claw damage is, and ironing it in place let me also reposition the frayed edges to where they should be. I’m not sure if I want to do anything else to further mend them. This took a few hours to do gently - even application of 140x200cm of interfacing requires some planning.

I’m encouraged to say that this worked, and the last picture shows the top layer ironed and reinforced. I’m now looking forward to reassembling it with new batting, and having it be a useable and loved blanket again.

Oh, that looks like a fun one for some r/visiblemending

I would definitely reinforce the tears on the top with more than just fusible interfacing. In your place, I would find some fabric in a similar color to the design, cut some more diamonds, and stitch them on there as patches.
