Brother XR1355 help with alpha stitches?

I'm new to sewing, so this is probably user error on my part, but I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. I'm trying to use the alpha stitches to do some simple monograms and after the first two letters everything goes awry. Any advice on doing words or more than two letters correctly? Anyone else encounter problems?
