How to entertain my service dog on a 24 hour train ride?

Post Body

So, we’re taking Amtrak home for the holidays, and the train ride is about 24 hours long. We get on at 3pm and there is a 3 hour layover about 6 hours in, at 9pm until midnight, and then after that we’ll be on the train until 3 pm the next day. I’ve been told the conductor will let us know when there will be long enough stops to let my dog off to potty.

I’m not too concerned about his behavior, as he’s flown before and had no problems, but I am worried about him getting bored and antsy. My plan for the day we get on the train is to take him for a nice off leash hike in the morning, to get as much energy out at possible beforehand. I also am planning on taking him on a good walk during the layover, so he won’t need to go potty again until the next morning.

However, we then have the full day on the train of doing basically nothing. While he comes to work with me for longer days, I worry about him getting bored, since there won’t really be any breaks like we have during the workday.

Would it be alright to bring a couple chews for him? Or perhaps a lickimat that I can add some applesauce to?

Do you have any other suggestions of things I should bring, or things to do? I’ll have another person with me, so we should have a row to ourselves, if that matters.
