My fiance and I each have service dogs that were self trained, both for ptsd and psychosis related issues for psychiatric help as we can't go out in public without a flare up/meltdown. However, I'm facing the issue of getting a letter saying I need mine. My psychiatrist can't write me a letter because her workplace doesn't allow it, and she's the one who diagnosed me. I don't see my primary care often enough so I don't think they'd write me anything, plus they aren't in network with my psychiatrist so they don't have documentation of my diagnosis.
My fiances psychiatrist is on maternity leave and we can't contact her to write anything for him, so now we're kinda stuck in this super shitty boat where we need to get the documents ASAP.
I'm wondering if maybe a proof of diagnosis is enough? I genuinely cannot function without my service dog, she's what grounds me when I'm spiraling or when I see things, especially when I drive. She knows I don't like people around me, so she will stand in front of me to put distance between us, she will lean against me when I begin to have a panic attack, and that's just two tasks she performs. My fiances is still a little one, so she has a bit to go with training but she's been improving so much that we can now take her out in public and she will be on her best behavior.
So depending on where you live, bring up the fair housing act and the ADA. Send a copy of the highlighted sections regarding housing in both documents.
