Yesterday, this really sweet girl came in to buy some stuff for an art project. She had a service dog and, even though I thought it was the prettiest dog, I knew not to bother it while it was working. So I didn't say squat about or to the dog. The old woman behind this customer, however, saw the dog and proceeded to babytalk and coo and distract the dog, literally right up until this person left. When she got to the register, she made a remark about how well behaved the dog was, and I kind of just said, "well, yeah, that's a typical service dog for you", but I don't think she noticed that I was annoyed with her. That girl left frustrated, she had to keep reminding her dog to keep it's focus on her, all because some old lady kept cooing "oh, good puppy! Oh what a good puppy you are!!"
I wanted to say something, but I don't even know if that's my place. I felt so awful, but I didn't know if I'd be making the situation worse by saying something (I genuinely don't care about this job, so a complaint wouldn't have hurt me - I just didn't want to put that girl in a bad position because I presumed she needed help). Do you have any advice if I see this happen again in the future? Is it okay for me to say something??
