Grandmother with sepsis. Needing support.

Post Body

Hi all. I’ve never had any experience with sepsis, so I’m just looking for some advice or support.

My grandmother has lived with me my entire life, and that has been the greatest thing to have ever happened to me. She is my favourite person to be around, and even though she can no longer walk or do anything herself, she is still my favourite person to be around. She has some lung disease (not sure which one as the name always confuses me), immunocompromised, can no longer walk, but her brain is 100% in tact. She had recently broken her arm and was in rehab at an old age home. She came back last Friday and was awfully tired, but we brushed it off as the transition can take a toll on someone. I had suspected a uti but since she is immobile there is no way to get her to a doctor other than by ambulance, so we waited. She seemed to be doing better until Monday morning. She woke up at 6am and called me to make her breakfast. I had gotten up and she was acting fine until she shafted rapidly shivering. Now I was certain it was a uti and I called the ambulance. They came and her vitals were good until she got into the ambulance. Her blood pressure went down to 75, and she just started to decline fast. They told me she was septic from a uti.

They took her to the icu, pumping her with a lot of fluids and antibiotics. She seemed to be doing better, her blood pressure coming back up and then stabilizing. This week she has seemed a lot more down. So tired she can not even open her eyes. She hasn’t been eating because we were told she can only eat liquids for now. Her vitals are good, and the doctors don’t seem to be too concerned, but I am. It is a heartbreaking sight to see, and I know the odds here. I just want to know if this sounds like she’s getting better, or if I should prepare myself. I am 19, and I love this woman more than anything, and I’m not ready to lose her, but I would like to know roughly what is going on. Obviously none of you are doctors (I think lol) but if anyone has been through something similar or can offer a little bit of advice I will be eternally grateful.

sorry to add, she is 84
