How can I improve my roams?

I've recently switched to support and started playing Senna. I understand she's supposed to be a support who roams a bit, especially with her E. However, I feel like my roams are a bit haphazard at the moment, mostly going with my adc bases and I have decent health and mana and no good buy, or if both junglers are on bot side. What should I be looking for to make more effective and intentional roams?
