I am coming from the perspective of being a decently popular author on JP and CN platforms, and I am heavily considering a switch to the English language market for primarily economic reasons. I also like the less pressure-heavy nature I tend to see.. you all can take months to write 80k words, I need to write that much over a month to keep my contract.
I am considering publishing a serialized work through Kindle Unlimited, and two things are putting me off:
1) Demographic of readers.. I simply don't know how to read the English market. From surface level reading, unless I write in romance, sci-fi, or "spicy romance"-adjacent(?), I am cutting my readership potential significantly.
2) Serialized work in general seems to be less popular in English. I generally understand why (different commuting/consumption habits), but is there not some space for it to work? Heaven Official's Blessing seemed to make it work.. as have a few Chinese authors publishing full length books (compilations, really) in English.. not to mention most Japanese light novels get thrown up on their sites as serialized works.
From a financial aspect, I see no barrier to a serialized work being released.. People pay KU a fee, Amazon pays me, there's not the same barrier of "oh, I need to buy X coins for Y chapters".. it's just a matter of "can you write the chapters".
