how unhealthy can it be as a habit?

ok so i'm not addicted and never have been, i only did it in a few moments of my life, but a friend of mine said it's really unhealthy if it becomes a habit. you people should know more abt this than him. i want to know, if i keep doing it in a safe way, not cutting deep, for a long period of time, how unhealthy would that be for my body? also, what should i be aware of in the matters of a "limit" to how much my body can withstand?
