I never thought I’d say this, but I’m starting to rethink my stance on guns. I’ve always been solidly anti-gun. Believed in strict regulations, thought the 2nd amendment was outdated, and never understood the obsession some people had with firearms. But now, I’m looking at the political landscape, and for the first time, I get why people say we need them.
With Trump back in office and doing some seriously authoritarian stuff, I can’t help but feel uneasy. The way he talks about “retribution”, the way his supporters are openly threatening violence, the way he’s stacking the government with loyalists who would rather serve him than the constitution.. it’s terrifying. And if history has taught us anything, it’s that when a leader starts consolidating power like this, things can go downhill fast.
I’m not saying I’m about to go buy an AR-15 tomorrow, but I’ve started to see why having some kind of self-defense isn’t just about personal safety. It’s about making sure the people still have some power if things really go off the rails. I hate that I feel this way, but I also hate feeling helpless while watching a wannabe dictator get ready to dismantle democracy.
I guess I’m just wondering if anyone else who used to be anti-gun is feeling the same way. Because this is new for me, and I honestly don’t know what to do with it.
no longer staunchly anti gun
believing in building their own social media and shopping infrastructure and celebrations
It's been something.
The rebels in Myanmar fought the government to a standstill with 3D printed guns. Then regular ones raided from supply depots.
A nice thing about having a gun is that it allows you to get a better one later. This was actually a major part of the Allie's strategy. They gave the citizens Hitler disarmed access to cheap mass produced guns in order to allow them to raid supply depots.
They stopped them in Vietnam and Afghanistan.
South Korea did it with umbrellas and a willingness to just straight up grab the automatic weapons pointed at them. Now imagine this but an armed population.
Get a black powder pistol and shoot that. Will teach you a lot about maintenance and handling.

Because the right people willingly disarmed themselves.
