What to expect from typical ER visit?
Post Body

I’ve seen and been given conflicting information on this topic and wondering if anyone has personal experience they might share to help shed light on this for me.

TLDR: After someone has a suspected seizure, with no history of seizures before, if they go to the emergency department (in the US), what is typically done?

…

I am under the impression that in order to confirm a seizure, it must be caught on EEG—there is no way to know otherwise afterward if for sure you had one.

They may or may not run tests or keep you under observation (??), or put you on anticonvulsants or give you lorazepam or something, and then they will suggest you go see a neurologist for an actual diagnosis and treatment.

Am I wrong about how this scenario usually plays out?

My PCP and functional medicine dr both didn’t advise me to go to the ER but rather just make an appointment with my PCP and then a neurologist. Is this reasonable?

I do have other chronic illnesses that are neurological in nature, so it’s more likely a progression of that rather than a tumor or heart problem, but … I thought I was supposed to go to the ER to confirm those things? Also worth noting I am almost completely bedridden so perhaps this is part of why I wasn’t advised to go to ER?

Anyway I am very puzzled and would love some of your insight. Thank you!
