Scared to sleep now
Post Body

36F with several chronic health issues but only recently has this escalated into what we think are seizures in my sleep. Specifically, focal aware that are waking me up. 3 in the past 2 months, the last being this evening. Now almost 5 hours later, I still feel horrible, and I’m afraid if I go to sleep again, I’ll have another.

The first we weren’t sure was a seizure. The second was … really suspicious. Tonight just has me terrified.

My dr knows about the first two and I’ll tell them tomorrow about this most recent one. We are trying already to arrange for ambulatory EEG, but this definitely makes me want to do it RIGHT. NOW. (😭)

The awareness lasts probably less than a minute, maybe even seconds. It’s hard to tell because I’m first aware while asleep, then wake up during. The waking portion seems to last less than 30 seconds, maybe even less than half that. Again, disoriented so hard to tell.

Does anyone else have focal aware seizures that wake you from sleep? Does anyone know if it is more/less likely to have one the same day as another?

I’m just … totally freaking out. I know this is probably NOT a good thing to have going on with my health… And the experiences themselves have been really, really scary. If anyone has a little peace of mind to throw at me, please do. 🙏

Edit to add: I have some extenuating circumstances with my health that make an emergency room visit extremely difficult and likely to make me significantly more sick in many ways, so thus far my drs haven’t suggested I go to the ER following waking up from this sort of thing. After 3 times though, I don’t know if that will change. I am under the impression it is not possible to tell if a seizure has happened unless it’s caught on EEG, but the ER may want to do some tests or scans to determine if there’s an obvious cause.
