DIY Hidden Room Guide

How to create your own secret room

Step 1: Choosing a Disguise

Step one to creating a secret compartment is quite obvious to plan how the entrance to your compartment will be disguised from its proper functionality. The best way to do this is to build your door out of an item or object that would otherwise not be unusual in the current context.

Step 2: Creating a Hidden Hinge Mechanism

All compartments that use a door must also by default require the use of a hinge. The most popular hinges for hidden doors work just like a regular hinge on the side of the door, except that they are recessed into the door and adjacent wall so that the door may sit flush against the wall, like this. Another form of hinge for a hidden door is the vertical door hinge. Similar to the previous hinge, this mechanism also allows the door to swing open sideways, except the hinge is a rotational mechanism that sits on top and below the door in an inconspicuous location so that the door may be less obvious.

The Murphy Door

If this is too much work or you want something a little fancier, I have also reached out to the Murphy Door Company and they gave this subreddit a 10% off discount code “reddit10” (delete the quotation marks of course). The doors here are actually pretty expensive, I was playing around on the website and the doors start at around $750. However, they actually will custom design the door to your exact specifications/measurements and send it preassembled. They give you choices of wood type, swing direction, and side, and they have add-ons of cabinet doors and extra shelves, door siding/trim, and even a lock hidden in the side of your door. It is an expensive option, but I love the Murphy Door’s customization.

Here is a guide to install the Murphy Door or practically any other hidden door that uses a vertical rotation hinge if you choose the DIY route.

Hope this helps, and I hope to see some of the doors if you guys make any!
