When we first meet Teaks, Garl is interested in the tablet that she's examining, he thinks to himself (this can't be...) (is this really..) then asks Teaks what it is

My first assumption was that he was acting surprised of the rock or even just genuinely interested so he could make friends with Teaks

BUT, couldn't they have just added some (...) (..I have no idea what I'm looking at) with his shocked face sprite? Does Garl actually see something on the Rock or is it just him being friendly and acting interested to befriend Teaks?
