I am a new scuba instructor, teaching recreational diving and entry level technical diving. In order to support teaching, I opened up a small scuba retail business from my home and my two-car garage has evolving into what you may call a small dive shop. I do have online sales too.
I have been approached by a few dive manufacturers to sell their gear. Normally manufacturers prefer to deal with dive shops that have a retail location in a commercial area. They do not want to deal with some guy teaching out of his garage. But in my case, since I am the only one teaching tech and rec for miles, I have a certain appeal.
I have the choice to carry two product lines (names of brands withheld here.) The first one is a well known brand known for delivering quality without breaking the bank. Profit margins on it are very low so while it allows a lot of people to buy quality gear at reduced price, I do not make much selling their line.
The second is more expensive product line. The brand attempts to make the "best gear" without charging the "highest price" so while their gear is superior quality, it is not the kind of superiority that would benefit most divers. Their product line is priced higher and I make more selling their products.
I will carry both product lines but only one will be my primary product line. In other words, I will be the display center displaying almost all items from one product line while other ones would be available to order. I am wondering which one should be the primary line and which one should be the backup?
