Training for stronger finning?
Post Body

Pretty much what the title says. I'd like to know if anyone has tips for how to structure pool training to become a stronger finner. My plan at the moment is basically to hop in the pool with my fins, and work on improving my times over a variety of distances.

I am 5' 9.5" and a lean 180lbs. I used to be a competing powerlifter, and I still train like one, so I have very strong legs and hips. I'm also quite dense. I will be competing again in the future, so it's not out of the question that I will end up 20 pounds heavier over the next 12-18 months.

My cardiovascular fitness is above average, but not stellar. I am very much built for sprinting, both on land and in the water (I was on a swim team for a while in my teens). I'm currently working my way up to swimming a mile non-stop to improve my cardio, but I have strong doubts that surface swimming translates to finning power.

I plan to practice a variety of kicks, but I'm guessing that the flutter kick is the most powerful way to propel yourself?

This isn't some kind of bid to use less air underwater, or to avoid learning buoyancy control, or anything like that - I strongly believe in being prepared for any eventuality if I'm going to put myself in a possibly life-threatening situation. Training to be a stronger finner just makes sense.

My fins are Mares Avanti X3's, if that matters.
