There is some discrepancy amongst our staff about the time out. Recently we were told that time outs must be done prior to the incision but after draping is complete. But when questioned about where that’s being referenced from, no one can find anywhere that says that. It’s not in any hospital policy, or any other policy for any other organization.
Has anyone heard of this being a thing? And it so where I can find it?
Edit: I mistyped. The part about the time out being done after the draping is what I cannot find, nor is that in my hospitals policy. We have a time out policy that only mentions being done before the incision. My apologies
With that logic, prior to incision could be an hour before surgery, yesterday in the breakroom, as everyone’s scrubbing in…because technically that’s prior to incision… Policy shouldn’t hold anyones hand on this. Literally right before the knife touches the skin. That’s what it’s implying.
Always time out after Anesthesia takes the last drape to poles. Right before first incision. Not sure why this would be an argument or issue, it needs to be done prior to starting. This is your moment to be extra sharp, pay attention and either agree or disagree. Board says removal of mass from left shoulder, but it’s draped to the right one? Disagree. Advocate for your patient. We’re there to complete a successful surgery and do what’s right. Always timeout before first incision.

Sounds like your hospital needs to define it for them. They aren’t standing over the patient. WE ARE. WE say when the timeout occurs. Tell them to chart that!
