Here is the setup. In a very advanced galaxy, society was not thriving. The cause of this was immortality. In practically every corner of the galaxy, there were immortal figures ruling corporations, crime organizations, governments. It was very dystopian. Powerful, immortal figures were capable of practically anything. The systems set up to protect normal people with an actual lifespan failed spectacularly as corruption was imbedded deep into most governments.
Everyone knew what needed to be done, but who could stand up the immortals? No one but the Dax. The Dax had banned immortality long ago. Each one of their citizens were given a lifespan of 100 rotations (300 years). Their currency was time. Workers would work until they earned their 100 rotations and then retire. Those who joined the military would be granted the full 100 right away. However, most of the Dax never left their home system. The galaxy was a dangerous place to travel.
As things reached a tipping point the Dax plotted a war. With many allies but even more enemies, the Dax decided that the only way forward would be to implement a lifespan for everyone. The war began, and in the end, the Dax seized control of the galaxy. Many immortals were killed, and the ones who surrendered were given another 50 rotations to live before they must die. In this new order, people attend their own funerals, and the currency for most races is time.
My Story takes place over 500 rotations after the war. The Dax maintain control, and the galaxy is a much safer place. They have the support of many, but as expected, many powerful people don't like the idea of their impending demise.
So my one question is this. Do you support the Dax in what they did? Do you support the slaughter of billions to achieve peace?
Here is another way to look at it. What if a Nazi-like regime formed today in our world, but their mission was to stop climate change?
