Can meth be cooked in an environment without oxygen or much gravity?

Post Body

I'm writing a story where FTL travel has been achieved for a while, and some government warship comes across the equivalent of white trash in space cooking meth relatively near some outpost on the ridge of the galaxy. The reason the cooks aren't galaxies away from all civilization or something is because FTL takes time, is expensive, certain distances can only be traveled with certain ships, yadda yadda yadda.

In order to avoid all the fumes that happen with making meth, and most importantly since they are in space anyway, I thought it made sense that it be done in a vacuum environment, exposed to space perhaps. Is this possible? Do the chemical functions still work? I don't know anything about meth, but I thought it wise to first ask the question, to see if this would make sense at all. Or are the chemical reactions of meth typically made in a vacuum anyway and this is all redundant lol

I know I know, it's seemingly very soft sci fi anyway and I shouldn't care about something like this or whatever, but I do.

Alright without getting too much into the weeds of things

  • The most white trash friendly method is done inside a pressurized bottle meaning the existence of oxygen or gravity is irrelevant
  • At near-freezing temperatures the reaction would not happen
  • The reason fumes are an issue IRL is because most houses don't come with a fume hood (a chemist's version of those things you see above grills in kitches) but it'd be decently easy to hook into your regular air scrubber if you're making meth for profit
  • I concur that you really don't NEED it to be meth -- Meth IRL is popular primarily because it lasts long and the key precursors are/were decently available from cough medicine. There's no saying said cough medicine would be equally available during the space age
