I still enjoy SyFy. Here is why:
Post Body

So there's been a lot of juvenile hate for siffy recently, and I cannot help but argue with it. There is quite a bit of justification for that hate, but the reasoning is still way off.

  1. SyFy went downhill in quality the past few years. Not quite. The Scifi Channel was always a rather mediocre channel, mainly showing reruns of old TV shows during the day and bad monster movies at night. Their highlights were when they actually had a quality show on, which happened only rarely. To date, the only major high budget SyFy program successes, no longer on the air, were Stargate: SG1, Stargate: Atlantis, Battlestar: Galactica and Farscape. Now, they are simply at a low point, trying out a few new programs (Caprica and SG:U) to see what sticks. There is really no change in quality, other than they had no success with the last two experiments in high-budget shows.
  2. SyFy doesn't show science fiction anymore. Haven? Warehouse 13? Sanctuary? Sure none of these shows are any SG:SG1, but they are most certainly science fiction, and good shows to boot.
  3. They should show reruns instead of bad reality shows. Oh, I would most definitely want this, but there is zero point in it. Who watches reruns anymore? I'm quite certain that most people reading this have at least one Star Trek full series boxed set. On the other hand, weird wrestling and paranormal shows are cheap to make, and bring in many more viewers than showing all three parts of Liars, Guns and Money back to back.
  4. They don't understand their audience. This is the most confusing argument to me. What part of their audience don't they understand? Does the scifi community consist of some sort of hidden majority of TV watchers? You are not a special snowflake. You are a statistic. Believe it or not, middle aged women and teenagers will vastly outnumber you when it comes to TV watching. Why gear a multi-million dollar show to a small percentage of your audience?
  5. The ratings system is flawed. Only in the sense that the ratings system means that your favorite shows may not be produced. Television lives off of advertisers. Advertisers expect to pay for something that people will watch. If a show is only considered great by a million people and nobody else has any interest in it, advertisers won't pay money to air ads on it.
  6. They cancel good shows. Maybe. They certainly cancel shows that aren't making any money. I don't know if anyone here remembers the comments once SG:U came on the air, but the overwhelmingly majority of people were complaining that all it is is a bunch of guys arguing on a space ship. Caprica was panned as boring by the dedicated BS:G fanbase. While there still remained a dedicated core group who watched every episode, there was no growth in fans, and no attraction for outsiders.
  7. Shows are aired at the wrong time. Shows change schedule for one reason and one reason only, they are not being watched by enough people.

In conclusion, after they failure of the last few high budget shows, they are playing it safe with cheap shows and movies that appeal to a wide audience. I am looking forward to this coming seasons Warehouse 13, Eureka, Haven, Red Faction: Origins, Alphas maybe even Sanctuary and certainly a whole lotta guilty pleasure late-night movies. Hopefully, they will soon take another gamble on a new high-budget scifi series.
