Ethical Scifi: Does the science behind Prometheus' main plot bother anyone else?
Post Body

I believe there is a name behind this idea which escapes me at the moment but the idea of an alien planting the seed of life on Earth with the intention of in the end creating a specific life form....

I mean 99% of the species that are created and died throughout this process over the millions of years are thrown away. Quite wasteful no? It just seems like an extremely inefficient means of creating a single species. I suppose it could be argued that all the throwaway life helped facilitate the end product in some way... but it still seems like an extremely arduous route to achieve this goal... either that or neglecting the fact that 99% of all life has went extinct altogether. Ultimately, this part of the plot seems to undermine the process of evolution to me.

And I enjoy science fiction that properly demonstrates science and in that way helps portray science in a positive light.

It kinda reminds me of "The Island" it really bothered me that they tried to imply that practicing cloning could only lead to a negative way of treating clones. If humans are ever cloned they will NEVER be treated like non humans. So that troubled me as well.

** edit ** I actually really liked the movie. There are just a few things that disappointed me. It bothers me when science fiction doesn't portray science(evolution in this case) properly. I'd also LOVE to see more science fiction portray science as a good thing. Instead... the technology is always the BAD GUY! It seems like a natural to me that science would utilize it's fiction as a means of painting a positive light of science and technology. It's supposed to be entertaining sure... but it's also supposed to be inspiring the future.
