I've noticed in the Star Trek series from TOS to Voyager, ( I have not seen the newer ST series) to the Dune movies, to Babylon 5 there are no cell phones depicted. They have communicators, but not cell phones. Only in the Expanse was something like a cell phone shown. How is it there is nothing like cell phones in these technologically advanced civilizations?
Same reason they don't have quadcopter drones, transdermal patches or keyhole surgery — Sci-fi is sometimes exceptionally bad at predicting technology that seems extremely obvious in hindsight.
Conversely video calls have been hyped up as The Next Big Thing for a century and then just kind of got stuck as a work tool once it quietly became as ubiquitously available as predicted.
