Autistic adults experience complex emotions, a revelation that could shape better therapy for neurodivergent people. To a group of autistic adults, giddiness manifests like ābeesā; small moments of joy like āa nice coffee in the morningā; anger starts with a ābody-tensingā boil, then headaches.

Alexithymia was something I just recently learned about.
I have anxiety and one of the sticking points with therapy has been that therapists want a thought process behind your emotions, when I donāt actually have any. And then, if they accept that, they ask what anxiety feels like in my body. And Iām like, nothing? And theyāre like ābut how do you know youāre anxious?ā And Iām like cuz I feel anxious? And theyāre like ābut if you donāt have any thoughts that are causing you anxiety and you donāt have any body sensations how can you know?ā
At first I thought it was just a problem with that therapist, but this has been a round around with 4 different therapists now.
I had my appointment for the 4th therapist and I decided I didnāt want the same thing to happen again and I needed to be able to communicate effectively with my therapist. It might sound weird but I thought maybe I could describe myself to ChatGPT and they could help ātranslateā what I want to say in a way thatās understandable to others.
ChatGPT, unprompted, decided to diagnose me with Alexithymia. Iām completely aware that AI is not an accurate way to get medical help or a valid diagnosis, but it was definitely bizarre to see that happen and sent me down a rabbit hole.
