Autistic adults experience complex emotions, a revelation that could shape better therapy for neurodivergent people. To a group of autistic adults, giddiness manifests like ā€œbeesā€; small moments of joy like ā€œa nice coffee in the morningā€; anger starts with a ā€œbody-tensingā€ boil, then headaches.

Alexithymia was something I just recently learned about.

I have anxiety and one of the sticking points with therapy has been that therapists want a thought process behind your emotions, when I donā€™t actually have any. And then, if they accept that, they ask what anxiety feels like in my body. And Iā€™m like, nothing? And theyā€™re like ā€œbut how do you know youā€™re anxious?ā€ And Iā€™m like cuz I feel anxious? And theyā€™re like ā€œbut if you donā€™t have any thoughts that are causing you anxiety and you donā€™t have any body sensations how can you know?ā€

At first I thought it was just a problem with that therapist, but this has been a round around with 4 different therapists now.

I had my appointment for the 4th therapist and I decided I didnā€™t want the same thing to happen again and I needed to be able to communicate effectively with my therapist. It might sound weird but I thought maybe I could describe myself to ChatGPT and they could help ā€œtranslateā€ what I want to say in a way thatā€™s understandable to others.

ChatGPT, unprompted, decided to diagnose me with Alexithymia. Iā€™m completely aware that AI is not an accurate way to get medical help or a valid diagnosis, but it was definitely bizarre to see that happen and sent me down a rabbit hole.
