This might be a rant, or just a review...still haven't decided. The rating will be 2.4/5 stars.
- first scene with the brothers :
Understandably, they are trying to introduce the brothers, evil vs good, and how one brother died. However, that scene only foreshadowed that it would be a cheaply CGI-made film similar to Disney sitcom writing.
While introducing this plot is crucial to understanding the "School for Good and Evil", they should've showed a hologram sort/flashback in the mirror when Agatha crashed into the library rather than seeing that horribly cgi blood bath and Evil school master. Then explained in the ending that this hologram shown to Agatha was from the Good Brother because his spirit still remains (OR ADD THE PROFESSOR THAT WAS THE SEER!?!?)
2. Tedros....why?
A lot of people complained that Tedros wasn't blonde, but I say #JusticeForBrunettes
The only issue with Tedros is that he seemed like a sick love puppy who just fell in love with Agatha and Sophie every changing second. This movie script did him badly and made him look like less than a one-dimensional character. I agree with other Redditors saying that they should've focused more on Tedros and Sophie's blossoming relationship (i.e have Tedros give lingering looks when Sophie teaches the Nevers to be beautiful). They should've also fought with the Jack-O-Lantern more intense and have him become very vulnerable, him desperately crying for Sophie to come to help him.
3. Waste of CGI/resources = reappearance of Evil Brother:
I do stand by this, the blood magic too....they could've just made it red lights and I would've been happy. It did seem like a waste of money to keep having the Evil Brother reappearing, they should've instead focused on the nemesis dreams and the white face that Sophie keeps dreaming about.
4. NEVER BALL FIGHT WAS PROOF THAT CGI WAS NOT NEEDED
This scene (after the Evers and Nevers switched costumes) and when there was just fighting, music, flashing lights, and amazing costumes. Specifically where Hort was just using something to bash someone's head in. Really beautiful scenery and hopefully a lesson to film students/anyone in the film industry that CGI doesn't always create a positive effect. This scene is probably the most memorable.
5. BEST SCENE WAS MISSING, TEDROS AND AGATHA
I was hoping that they would show this scene, I remember when I was like 12 or something just always rereading that page - having butterflies ravage inside of my stomach.
In the scene where Tedros gathers all the ever boys and Agatha comes in to say "Don't hurt them please, Sophie doesn't know what she's doing" .
Then Tedros locks her in the bedroom saying "I can't lose you too" [dont come for me, this is only from memory]
Now if this scene was shown, the star rating would've been higher and my adulthood self would be fawning over Tedros again.
To conclude, I am very happy that the movie was created and I know that it has been the author's dream for a while and that he fought for this to happen. However, the main recommendation is to have many fans/readers involved in the scriptwriting process. We are the ones that know the heart and soul of this book, which would then create a masterpiece of a movie. Perhaps the movie was ruined by Netflix producers who wanted another Hocus Pocus 2 like, perhaps not.
TDLR: It feels that the producers/film people wasted too much money on the CGI and should've spent more time writing a clear and flowing script.
